On December 10, 2019 at 17.00 in the lobby of IM Perushtitsa we will present the documentary "History of the Ancient Theater in Philippopolis", which is part of the donations to the Museum video archive by Mr. Yordan Detev. The ancient theater is one of the main public buildings of ancient Philippopolis. Built in the 90s of the first century AD, during the reign of Emperor Domitian, when the mayor of Philippopolis was Titus Flavius Cotis - a descendant of the Thracian royal dynasty, three times high priest of the province of Thrace, judicial representative of the metropolis and responsible for constructions.
The theater lasted until the end of the IV century. It is one of the best preserved ancient theaters in the world. Archaeological excavations took place in the period 1968-79, as a result of which the theater was discovered and partially restored.
Today, the Ancient Theater in Plovdiv is fully adapted to the modern cultural life of the city. It hosts various performances and concerts for about 3,000 spectators.
